"Exploring a Plant-Based Lifestyle: Weighing Benefits and Drawbacks...Is This Diet Optimal?

Plant-based diets have been gaining popularity in recent years, and for good reason. They have been shown to have numerous health benefits, such as reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. However, like any diet, there are also some potential drawbacks. In this blog post, we will explore the pros and cons of a plant-based diet for your health as you progress through your Asset building years. (As we discuss this issue, ALWAYS discuss any lifestyle changes with your health advisors. We are just normal folks here talking about life and do not give personal or any other kind of medical advice. Good, let's move on)

PROS

Lower Risk of Chronic Disease

Plant-based diets are rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals that have been shown to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

Weight Loss

Plant-based diets are often lower in calories than diets that include meat and dairy products, making them a great option for those looking to lose weight. As a matter of fact, my son-in-law, who is very healthy, runs a lot, decided to go on a strictly plant based diet over the past month and he is the thinnest I've ever seen him. So it does appear that it works for some folks.

Increased Energy

Plant-based diets are often higher in complex carbohydrates (as opposed to 'empty carbs' like pastries, pastas, etc), which provide sustained energy throughout the day.

Better Digestion

Plant-based diets are rich in fiber, which promotes healthy digestion and can reduce the risk of digestive disorders such as constipation and diverticulitis.

Improved Skin Health

The vitamins and minerals found in plant-based foods can improve skin health by reducing inflammation and promoting collagen production.

CONS

Nutrient Deficiencies

Plant-based diets can be lacking in certain nutrients such as vitamin B12, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids. These nutrients are important for overall health and may need to be supplemented.

Protein Intake

While plant-based diets can provide adequate protein, it can be more difficult to get all the essential amino acids from plant sources alone. There's a ton of debate around this question and lots of great resources to develop your knowledge on the subject.

Food Restrictions

A plant-based diet can be restrictive, making it difficult to eat out or socialize with friends and family who don't follow the same diet. It's a challenge to not make others uncomfortable because you know some are going to feel like they're hurting your feelings by not joining in on the veggie lifestyle. So go easy on the friends and family.

Social Stigma

Some people may view a plant-based diet as extreme or unnecessary, leading to social stigma or pressure to abandon the diet as friends and family wag fingers in your direction. But if this is "your" choice, then Stand Strong.

Cost

Plant-based diets can be more expensive than traditional diets, as organic or specialty plant-based products can be pricier. But being a wise Gardener, your Assets should allow plenty of margin to afford a bit more luxury in your diet!

In conclusion, a plant-based diet has many health benefits but also comes with some potential drawbacks. It's important to carefully consider your dietary needs and preferences before making any major changes to your diet. A plant-based diet can be a healthy and sustainable option for many, but it's important to make sure you're getting all the necessary nutrients and maintaining a balanced diet, which requires a good amount of research and education.

One additional benefit...You can grow a "Veggie Garden" along with your "Asset Garden"!
